How to Build a Cheese Board (For Real People, Not Pinterest)

How to build a cheese board for real people
The short answer: a great cheese board needs 3 to 5 cheeses across textures (one soft, one firm, one wildcard), one salty thing, one sweet thing, one crunchy thing, and one briny thing, arranged with the cheeses spaced apart and everything else filling the gaps. Budget 60 grams of cheese per person for an appetizer, take it all out of the fridge an hour early, and stop before it looks like Pinterest. Real boards are generous, not styled.

This is the guide we'd give you at the counter if the line weren't forming. No prop grapes, no cheese roses, no rules that exist for the photo. Just the board people actually finish.

Step one: pick 3 to 5 cheeses across textures

Variety of texture beats variety of everything else. The reliable spread:

  • One soft and creamy. A triple crème, a bloomy goat like Grey Owl, or a fresh chèvre. Vanishes first, every time. Buy extra.
  • One firm and aged. 24-month Comté or a 3-year cheddar. The anchor that keeps everyone honest.
  • One from another animal. A Manchego (sheep) changes the pace entirely.
  • One blue, if your crowd is brave. Bleu d'Auvergne next to honey converts more skeptics than arguments do.
  • One conversation piece. The Honey Goat is ours: the cheese guests photograph and ask about.

Step two: the four supporting food groups

One of each, small bowls, done:

Step three: assembly, the unfussy way

Cheeses first, spaced apart like they need personal space, each with its own knife. Bowls of the wet things next. Crackers and bread fanned where hands will actually reach. Fill every gap with the small stuff until the board reads abundant. Total time: ten minutes. If it looks slightly too casual, you've done it exactly right.

The one rule that matters more than all the styling: out of the fridge 45 to 60 minutes before guests arrive. Cold cheese is muted cheese, and room temperature is where the money you spent becomes flavour.

Quick FAQ

What do you put on a cheese board? Three to five cheeses across textures, plus one thing each from crunchy (bread, crackers), sweet (honey, jam), briny (olives, cornichons), and salty-rich (cured meat or tinned fish).

How much cheese per person on a board? About 60 grams per person for an appetizer board, 120 to 150 grams when cheese is the main event.

Do you cut cheese before serving? Cut a few starter pieces from each wedge and leave the rest whole with a knife. It invites the first move without drying everything out.

Can someone just build the board for me? Yes, happily: our platters are exactly this, made by the counter to your headcount, for pickup or GTA delivery.
