Pan! Le Rouze '24

Domaine Les Aricoques is a small natural producer in Savoie — a mountain wine region in the French Alps whose combination of altitude, glacial soils, and indigenous grape varieties produces wines of real singularity. Pan! Le Rouze is their take on a light red — or a very dark rosé, depending on where you draw the line — and it sits in that thrilling in-between zone with complete confidence.

The blend is 85% Gamay and 15% Mondeuse, unified by a partial whole-cluster fermentation that brings a lifted, peppery spice and a structural tension that pure carbonic or destemmed approaches cannot achieve. Gamay in Savoie is a different proposition from Beaujolais: the mountain terroir gives it a leaner, more mineral character, with sharper acidity and a more restrained fruit profile that rewards attention. Mondeuse is Savoie’s native red grape — deeply pigmented, tannic, and aromatic, with a violet and black pepper character that adds a dark, serious edge to the Gamay’s brightness. The result is a wine that shifts as you move through the glass: light and perfumed on entry, then firmer and more structured as it opens, with a vibrancy and focus that makes it endlessly interesting. Chill it slightly, open it early, and drink it with anything.
