Le Bourg Sud
Old-Vine Chardonnay | Avize Grand Cru, Champagne, France
- Notes
La Rogerie is the project of François Petit and Justine Boxler — a partnership that brings together two of French wine's most distinguished lineages. François comes from a longtime Champagne family in Avize and worked with Anselme Selosse, the most influential grower in the region's modern history. Justine comes from Domaine Albert Boxler in Alsace, one of the great names in French white wine. Together they farm fewer than three hectares of old-vine Chardonnay in Avize, producing wines in quantities so small they have become increasingly difficult to find — not by design, but simply because there isn't much to go around.
Avize sits in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, between Cramant to the north and Oger to the south, and La Rogerie's range is an exercise in mapping the village at increasingly close range — exploring how slope position, topsoil depth, and proximity to the chalk change the wine from one parcel to the next. Le Bourg Sud is the southern counterpart to Bourg Nord: a wine drawn from multiple parcels at the southern end of Avize and just across the boundary into Oger, assembled across vintages through a perpetual reserve. Where Bourg Nord looks toward Cramant, Bourg Sud looks toward Oger — the same grower, the same grape, and essentially the same village, viewed from the opposite end. The soils shift subtly, the exposure changes, and the wine responds: a little warmer, a little rounder, with the same mineral precision and extraordinary length but a different weight and texture. Taken together, the two wines offer one of the most illuminating comparisons in grower Champagne.
