Kékfrankos '23
Kékfrankos | Sopron, HU
- Notes
Peter Wetzer is the standard-bearer for fine wine in Sopron — a small, cool-climate appellation in northwestern Hungary, tucked along the Austrian border near the shores of Lake Fertő. His Kékfrankos (known as Blaufränkisch in Austria and Germany) is a benchmark expression of this noble grape: precise, mineral, and unmistakably terroir-driven.
Deep ruby with a violet edge, it opens with a beautifully aromatic nose: fresh dark cherry, blackcurrant, dried violet, black pepper, and a cool, iron-rich mineral quality that speaks directly to Sopron’s volcanic and schist soils. On the palate, it is elegant and structured — medium-bodied with firm, fine-grained tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savoury finish with notes of dark spice and earth. A wine of real precision and place.
