Light on its feet, with plenty of aromatic personality. Barco del Corneta’s Loseco 2024 is a Verdejo from Castilla y León, Spain, with a fruity, refreshing character and a lively feel. This is a white for the part of the evening when the first plates arrive: something bright to pour alongside salty snacks, fresh cheese, and conversation that runs past dinner.

Verdejo is closely associated with Castilla y León, the inland region of northwestern Spain that includes Rueda, one of the grape’s best-known homes. 

Serve chilled with young goat cheese, fresh sheep’s-milk cheese, or a bowl of olives and Marcona almonds. For dinner, try grilled prawns, white fish with lemon and parsley, or a courgette and chèvre tart. Its refreshing style also makes a good starting point for a tapas spread, especially when there’s something salty, something creamy, and a little bread to bring it all together. Pour into a white-wine glass and let it warm slightly as you eat.
