Alto Adige’s Most Charming Red

Kalterersee — or Lago di Caldaro in Italian — is one of Alto Adige’s most distinctive DOC wines, and Niedrist is among its finest producers. Made predominantly from Schiava, a light-skinned indigenous grape grown on the sun-drenched slopes above Lake Caldaro, this is a red wine that defies expectations with its elegance and ease.

Translucent ruby with a garnet edge, it opens with a disarmingly pretty nose: fresh cherry, wild strawberry, dried violet, and a whisper of bitter almond. On the palate, it’s silky and light-footed — low tannins, bright acidity, and a clean, slightly bitter finish that is quintessentially Alpine. The “Classico Superiore” designation signals grapes from the historic heart of the appellation and a minimum alcohol level, ensuring concentration and typicity.
