Macchiona 'Dieciannidopo' is a red wine from Piacenza that's worth waiting for. The nose is deep and recognizable with notes of wet earth and autumn leaves, blackberry, ripe black cherry, leather and licorice. The palate is lively and fresh with lots of finesse. This is a rare and limited releasea that is drinking phenomenally right now.
The Macchiona cuvée comes from vineyards planted between 20 and 40 years ago on clay soils. The vines see a lot of heat in the summer - this part of Emilia-Romagna will sometimes see temperatures above parts of Sicily. The soils are nutrient-poor, but rich in phosphorus and potassium, which can make Macchiona closed and quite reductive when young. Bottle age is essential for these wines to show their best.
