Château La Grolet Cuvée Classique Rouge blends 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec. The vines at Grolet are now approaching 50 years, and this wine was native fermented and aged in a mixture of concrete and wooden vessels (20%) before being bottled without fining or filtration, and minimum sulphur. Dusty stones, gravels, perfumed wild cherry and raspberry rule the lighter-bodied palate (clocking in at a somewhat tamer than usual %12), running over a bed of worked leather, and framed with grippy / gritty tannins. There's an inherent freshness that is charming, making this a useful partner for roast pork / beef / root veg.
